Music Interviews: Venus Fly Trap On Being described as “Bladerunner rock n roll with dark acidic shades” & More.

1.Would you guys introduce yourselves and explain your role in the band?

I am answering the questions for VENUS FLY TRAP, ALEX NOVAK(VOX) spokesperson, organizer, promoter, also in the band is ANDY DENTON(GUITAR/PROGRAMMING).

2.Where did you guys meet and how did you form this band?

I had been in a band called ATTRITION who was based in London at the time, I had done an album and toured Holland with them, my first trip abroad with a band. Decided to move back to my native Northampton famous for BAUHAUS, ALAN MOORE, and the film KINKY BOOTS, hooked up with my brother JOHN NOVAK(ISAWS, WHERES LISSE) and TONY BOOKER an x art school student,i had also studied at art school. The line up has changed many times over the years, ANDY DENTON joined via a local band CROWMAN, initially as the drummer and ended up playing guitar and has done for many years.

3.What kind of music do you make or would like to make in the future?

We have been described as “Bladerunner rock n roll with dark acidic shades”, we create dark sonic cinema for the mind, film noir, sci-fi soundscapes that absorb post-punk, electronic and meld joy division, doors, chemical brothers like melted wax crayon colors.

Here’s a good example taking the CRAMPS horrorbilly and wiring it with electro…

4.What do you enjoy the most about the process of making music together?

The initial coming up with ideas, playing around with different sounds to see if it sparks anything before we start nailing down song structures, then it’s a long process of refining these embryonic songs into something usable. After much mixing and remixing it’s great to have a final result a definitive item and a relief.

5.What are some of your favorite themes to explore through your music?

Well, the most recent studio album ICON drew a lot from the WARHOL quote” in the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes” the idea of being famous for being famous, celebrity, idols, the new religion. Generally, science fiction in the widest sense, TARANTINO movies, would like to have a track on one of his movie soundtracks.

6. Who are some artists that you love or who you’d say has had a huge influence on your work?

What got me involved in music in the first place was the punk, new wave explosion it changed my perception on being able to be in a band, it was the getup and give it a go attitude and see where it leads appealed to me. Minimal experience but it didn’t matter it was the ideas that counted, this DIY approach got people involved in music who would not think of it before.

8. What’s your favorite part of touring, doing live performances?

Getting an immediate adrenaline buzz playing live and the interaction between band and audience which is sadly lacking at the moment, trying to work things out, to see what’s practical for the future.

9.What kind of message would you like to give to your fans through your music?

Don’t like to preach dogma, try to get the listener to participate in the process and read what they think is going on to spark their imaginations, to think for themselves.

10.Where do you guys see yourselves in the future, or what are your plans for the band?

Get back to doing some gigs, writing a new single at the moment and sorting some re-issues for later in the year, and plugging the recent release VENUS FLY TRAP/ALEX NOVAK-MERCURIAL CD/DL(GLASS RECORDS MODERN) a career-spanning retrospective that includes the best of VFT and other bands, projects I have been involved with ISAWS, RELIGIOUS OVERDOSE, TEMPEST, NOVA STATE CONSPIRACY, ATTRITION, THE DEN and SPORE, for people to delve into and explore further if they wish, about eighty minutes of music packed into this release.
